Hey Polycount!
Haven't posted in a long time, thought i'd rejoin yall! hopefully with something everyone will enjoy
So I'm working on an environment based loosely on a New Zealand forest while I learn to hand paint textures.
some reference and ideation.
The initial plan, without foliage(i've since decided to tone the saturation down a lot)
I'll be working in Photoshop, Max, and UDK, and I've already spent some time on this, but I'm totally open to critiques and ideas, and i'll try to give yall some progress from before this post so you can see where I'm headed hopefully.
So, I'm making a few tileables for the landscape, so far the plan is to have:
1 Dirt/Rock
1 Rocks/Moss
1 Moss
1 Grass
1 Smooth Stone
here's what I made initially:
and here are what they are now respectively, with some suggestions from friends and my teacher:
My Grass so far is:
and Stone:
Which I can't stand lol.
Also as a side note, I was thinking about trying for a more classic fantasy oil paint look by washing out my textures abit, and adding more color to the shadows
Looking forward to getting yalls feedback!

heres some layer adjustments to try and get things back on the track!
Added some more detail to the moss, may be too much, well see, gotta clean it up now
and just for the sake of context, this is where im headed with colors shaped, thats stuff, ill post the textures for the trees and the models once they are a bit more developed. This is in Max btw, sorry its hideous lol
Thanks for the feedback, PLEASE KEEP IT COMING !!!
I feel like the scene how ever has some weird scale issues, the stones feel like they should be a lot smaller and the trees scale feels weird also. Maybe the palms or what ever are too small?
If they're supposed to be a smaller type of palm try putting more clusters of them of varied sized; instead of stand alone trees.
Gannon, I definitely agree with you here, the tress are mostly place holders at this point, so much work left to be done on them! as for the scale of the stones, i'm currently working on a way to size them down that works with the rest of the textures.
