I've never heard of them and was wondering if anyone here has used them before? I just want to make sure before I backup some important files... just like anyone else.

I love a good stroge as much as the next person, but offering 512GB for free sounds a bit fishy. there's bound to be a catch. Stroge isnt cheap.


why not try dropbox? free 2GB with a good rep. more than enough for a few files here and there.

At least they're not lying about what the service is about, the free account's locked to just 1 computer. No good for syncing or sharing (I think. Taking it for a spin shortly).

well just different takes on a model dropbox allows access to multiple PCs but limits space, this one gives you space but limits access. might be ok for a data dump for a main PC.

It's got versioning so I guess that's kind of cool for us content creation folks. Media streaming, don't really see myself using that at all...it really is kind of baffling what they're trying to do.

Yes, it is completely redundant. That's the point; to provide a way to backup your files. It's not meant to be 'cloud' storage, for sharing between machines.

It's highly likely you can switch that one machine through some procedure, because as mentioned, it's for backup.

the 1TB briefcase plan is $79.92 a year on the site right now, which supports unlimited computers.

thats significantly less than Dropbox and iCloud ($100 for 50gb). 512GB is 5 bucks a month for unlimited machines. Who knows if they have the awesome version tracking and recovery features Dropbox has (edit: nm... https://www.backify.com/features 30 versions per file). If so, this is totally worth it if the service is good.

Yeah looks a bit wonky, but only in that dropbox is presented to you as a slick 'app', and these guys have pressed a big 'generic web hosting company' website design button.

I'm going to check it out with a throwaway account for a bit, and if it seems legit, I'll sign up proper. "Mor stroge beter!", as they say in wherever the fuck Xeno is from!

I got mine going, you can select folders you want Livedrive to constantly upload and it backs up that data online somewhere...

Only thing holding me back is the upload/download limit from my ISP!

How do you guys use these things then? I've got gigs and gigs of projects/training/reference that I'm always worried I might lose if my HDD died but uploading that would take weeks!

Are people using this just for the odd obj and photo album or is are you all using it as a genuine backup alternative to external HD's?

If I recall correctly, someone in these forums recently had their computer(s) AND their external HDD stolen. Also, if you house burns down, so does your external HDD, since I doubt any of you would keep it in a fire box.

The point of these sites is to store your stuff offsite, and if they do things correctly (and most do), they should have fairly regular nightly backups.

Also, it's slow to back up 30GB to an external HDD, so either way, you'll be waiting during your initial backup.

100mb file limit, no desktop app for free accounts. Still may be a decent option to host pictures or something.
