Hey guys.
just browsed the android marketplace a few minutes ago and I found a game that had some strinking visual similarities to WoW. It's a game called "Earth and Legend" by DVide Arts. Some of the Human base models (both male and female) as well as the female textures look a lot like the art assets I remember from WoW when I played it as well as that green mob I think is a near to direct copy of the WoW Trogg. There are other mobs where I am not a 100% sure but there quite a few striking similarities as well, e.g the hunters pet (worg) in the vid as well as some creature which look like Ogres.
I don't know if any of the guys on PC working at Blizzard are aware of this, in case you aren't just wanted to make sure you'll have a look into this.
so see for yourself:

Not much to fuss about here.

@TeriyakiStyle I am not saying this is real "news" just wanted to make sure people know
@Mcejn and I am well aware Gameloft are cheap sports but think they at least make a half assed try to cover up their ripoffs (and which is bad as well), where as I thought this one is a straight rip out of one of the several tools able to read WoW model and texture data, so I thought I'd mention it here
This, I agree.
If you want to see the proof go to www.mmosite.com and check out the game list, almost 50% will look like they were ripped off from Blizzard's Wow.
And the clearly ripped off proto drake in the end of the trailer
... oh ... wait ...
Trogg ripoff at 00:12
Proto drake ripoff at 01:40
as for comparision pics I can't make pics at the moment, because I am visiting my parents and I am on my mums linux netbook, with a super tiny screen but just look at this pic
and compare it to the model at 0:13 seconds into the vid in my initial post. same applies for a lot of other models in the video.
@danr I think that isn't really news to anybody in the industry either, but at least blizzard had to recreate their orcs and humans themselves, they didn't just copy the meshes and textures slapped them into a mobile engine and sold them for a hefty price (5.99€ is kind of steep for a mobile game of that quality)
I mean I know how it feels to have your art ripped off by someone. There are busses in Hamburg driving around with a pixelart banner that has several elements (including a bus of the hamburg public transport) all of them have been marginally altered and I get emails every once in a while asking about if I can make a banner for their company like I did for HHV (the hamburg public transport company) the first time I didn't know about it and I learned it the hard way. but back then I didn't have the money to pursue this in court. By now I use it as bonus advertising.
And it isn't any nicer if you do this with assets from a larger company, it's still stealing!
I see no resemblance to be honest.
world of warcraft is most likely not the only game this is borrowing from as some of the stuff just doesn't fit in.
edit: note the ear on the humans
Paycheck and lack of morals.
Sadly though, this seems to be a regular thing in mobile games. As mcejn mentions, just check out any Gameloft stuff, it's blatant. Ofcourse, there's a difference between 'inspiration' , and actual use of meshes and textures. The latter being easier to punish someone for, although I still suspect it's not worth Blizzard's time.
Wahlgren: in the face of unemployment, morals become pliable.
This on the other hand is outright asset theft in a commercial product.
Wait a second....
LOL
That quote must still get used today because of people needing to feel good about themselves when they discover they can do fuck all about people ripping off their stuff. I'd find a thoughtful letter to be a lot more sincere than "Hey I really like this stuff - and by 'this stuff', I mean the money it brings in, ho ho!"
Not everyone can afford a nice moral to lead their life by most times...
