Hey everyone! So, this school break, my good buddy (Steven Palmesano) and I have decided not to spend our time bowling, or playing water chess, or whatever kids do now-a-days, but instead we have decided to have a no-holds-barred competition with one another. Starting this Tuesday. The rules are as stated below:

•Environment related
•CGSociety, Polycount, and SimplyMaya forums (Because I lean toward game-res art, and he leans toward higher poly, we thought to post at a few forums was necessary to avoid bias)
•Begin time is 8/9 AM (CST/EST) and end time is 8/9 PM on the same day.
•WIP shots can be posted as frequently as the gentleman wants to post them
•Final images are to be posted before this deadline, no exceptions
•Topic for voting will be made shortly after the competition is finished, with the final renders from both of us
•Voting period is three days, so it will approximately end on 9/30 at 8/9 PM
•Winner is determined by the sum of the sites' total votes combined
•No work can be done on the project prior to the starting time
•No previous models can be implemented
•References can be collected before start time
•How the artist presents his work is up to him
•No PaintFX!

So, a bit about myself: I've been doing 3D, more or less, for a good 5 years or so. I say more or less because for a while I just had Maya open on my computer, and never did anything. But lately, I've had a renewed drive to be awesome. Now, it is an unfulfilled drive, but I'm trying. I'm a 6th quarter student at AILA, and I hope to work for Bethesda one day. Lofty goals, I know. But anyway, I hope this competition brings me just a little bit closer to my goals. No promises, though! I hope you guys like it.

This is what Mr. Palmesano says about himself:
"My name is Steven Palmesano and my buddy who is going to join me for this friendly competition is Andrew Leslie. We both started using Maya at around the same time (I started in 2006). However, I was young and stupid and did not take 3D art as seriously as I should have. Now that I only have a year left in school I realize the need to be more serious about my artwork so I have decided to get back onto forums."

He then goes on to state:
"However, we have not decided on a defined topic yet. I wanted to do some kind of animal hybrid with mechanical elements. Andy did not think this was as cool as I did though, so I brought up the alternative of doing an interior scene. We thought it was best to leave the decision of a topic up to the community, so you guys can decide what you want us to do! ...If anyone wants to know anything else or has a recommendation, please do not keep quiet!"

So yes, considering that I wish to be an environment artist, the hybrid seems like total crap; the interior could be cool for sure.
So, leave some suggestions, then once we get some, I'll post up some concept art, or reference, and then come Tuesday, we can get this show on the road!
I do apologize for the lack of images in this post.- and the corresponding wall of text, but I can promise that we'll try to make up for it.
So yes, take care, and soon we'll get to arting.
I'll timelapse my whole process, I think. Hope it turns out well.
Polycount is my favorite, don't worry.
-Andrew Leslie

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the time-lapse thing! I'll have to post that tomorrow since after I post this I'm going to die from exhaustion. And hey, you could make an environment for the hybrid animal..! I'm an environment guy myself, I'm just not completely restrained to them.

If you guys really want to get the competition going you both should create an environment based on the same concept ;)

I do prefer the interior scene idea, try to create something relatively small and efficient making sure you get stuff to show in the portfolio after this. :)

Yeah, so our theme is "Do an interior - do whatever type we want"

So I'll be posting a concept tonight, probably, and a bunch of reference, or something, so I can hit the ground running.

I should be posting my reference as well later tonight.

Well, the forum won't let me post my reference image. You can check the SM or CGTalk forums for the images:

I'm not planning on getting everything modeled out during this competition, just want to get something started for my reel.

Ok, I'm going for a Gothic-style rotunda sort of thing, like the shot from Knights of the nine- but with a dome instead of that flat thing they put in. Stained glass, et cetera. Maybe put some cool cave-ish bits into the tunnels; or at least some broken ruin pieces. Should be very fun!
Sorry, no fresh concepts from me; toooo tired.
See y'all tomorrow, bright and early, for some environment modellin'!

I learned today that I am really slow at modeling. :/ Spent a lot of time blocking out the space. I still feel as if the scale is off.

Hm, must be a day of learning; because I learned that I feel like a complete dick for taking a whole day out of my vacation back home with my parents to do a 3D contest- and the last beautiful day of vacation, according to the forecast. I really should be hiking with my Dad.

But here is an arched door, so far. Took me a while to figure out just how to do this.

    Long story short:
Felt like a Dick for neglecting my family- so I'm not doing this anymore. At least not today or during vacation.

JrWho is still doing his, though, on his own, and it will still turn out awesome. He's got skillz.- and I will do an environment like this soon, just not today or during vacation. It just seemed idiotic of me to spend one of my few days home doing something that I could do any day back in California.

    Sorry for the nonsense.

Spent some more time trying to fix the space and scale. Closer, but not quite there yet. Ran into at least three or four crashes already but nothing major. I've only done a couple basic interiors, so this one is definitely helping me learn some new stuff.

Also, the reason I'm being a douche and doing this while at home on break is because… well I live at home. Haha

I'm glad that I went along with this exercise. I learned quiet a bit while modeling and can't wait to get my time-lapse ready. Here's the renders. Please, feel free to give as much critique as you can, I certainly need it!

As for the voting… Andy will have to set a day aside himself and post his results. After that, we'll create a poll.
