Wowzers, it looks like I missed the party! It hadn't occurred to me that there'd be an entire forum full of these threads. I wish I'd found it sooner to join in on the critiques.
Hats off to all those of us who missed a few meals, sacrificed a few hours of sleep, and got parking tickets for forgetting to move our cars on street cleaning day, just so we could cross the finish line! Very impressive entries here (yemen, man...wowowow).
Here's what I submitted earlier in the week. Managed to get it down to 4703 tris out of the 7500 tris budget.
Oh yeah, a friend of mine wanted to know why I decided to add the geometry that I did to the skirt, instead of consolidating it all into one mesh and relying on the normal map. Here is the thought process and experimentation that went into my decision:
I had already taken the geometry down to under 5000 tris, so it seemed optimal to give the skirt, which takes up a huge chunk of the character, more silhouette space.
