Im using 3dsmax 11. I have a model that is not recieving correct lighting.its just black. I tried reseting xform and collapsing but it does not work. Im in smooth and highlights view.
I threw a light in there and still no change. any ideas?
well i figured it out, had way to many faces. so I welded the model. But now the faces are not smooth, some triangles are partly shaded and some are flat. I tried to smooth the entire model but it doesnt change.
I guess some of my edges were flipped or turned and I hit Msmooth in editable polygon mode and it did a face reset and all my normals were faced correctly. Not sure why this worked but glad it did.

changing all the smoothing groups to '1' basically should reset them. But you can also use the edit normal modifier (see below)
try the edit normals modifier
