Does anyone know when extracting normal maps in mudbox 2012, if a bump map is applied to the high poly, does it get baked down to the low poly as well?
You can produce a bump map, and then run it through Photoshop or xNormal to produce a normal map and merge them. It doesn't take long, and I actually prefer it since it gives me so much control over it.
Edit: I also just do a little more work in PS ahead of time and convert whatever textures I have to a height map to use to paint in Normals much the same way you would for a bump map. For this I test with Crazybump, but it does cost some money.
if the detail is to small to fit in your texture you are better of reproducing it in the shader. Baking it through the high poly will mess up the bake.

but in 2012 SAP you are able to convert a bump to a normalmap...
