It does need to be unique, yes, but this seems like a pretty far stretch from the original concept. This seems like you're taking the opportunity to make whatever you want and send it in for the test. Could work, could backfire.
Whatever you choose to do, should they contact you, I'd say the most important thing to do is have good reasoning for all the work you did. Sometimes making art for something like this is about how well you sell your pitch.
Yeah it's way out there, I couldn't even recognize it. . You'll be asked to work from concept all the time it's vital that you'll be able to follow the concept and add your unique touch to it and that's the thing, it's supposed to be just a "touch".
If you're seriously thinking about applying then maybe you should start from scratch and save that one for a later occasion.
I'm not even going to say that this is going to waste. If anything, it's another asset you can just drop on your website as "In Progress". But you're gonna have to make that building on the ArenaNet page.. And like they all said, when they say polygons, they mean triangles. I was the one who asked in an email. It's one of those differences between studios. Film generally always refers to quads, while game companies usually refer to tris.
It looks lovely though. I think anyone around the six foot height would be hitting their heads on the lower bar of that front arc though.

Agreed. One of the other guys doing this art test emailed ArenaNet and confirmed that the poly limit is 3,000 tris.
Wondering the same. Pretty sure you had to pick from the concept images.
According to them, it said 3000 Polygons. If this is 3000 Tris, I will have to rework it then.
Also, this differs from the original concept because it needs to be unique.
