You can decide how many poly's are added when you make a stroke... its called the detail slider. And Sculptris has one of the most realistic sculpting engines around, feels like sculpting clay!
Also ZBrush is damn cheap... updates have always been free. Great value for money. Get a student loan if you need, it costs half of what a 3d artist would spend on a laptop...
Not to mention Sculptris also has the Reduce Selected option to quickly lower the tri count starting with the more dense areas of the mesh, so it's great if you have too many tris during the basic blocking out steps of sculpting.

You can get a reduced price version here if you have a student id.
The only thing that really kills Sculptris for me is there are no sculpting layers, yet... Other than that it's a neat program
I hope they add that in a free alpha, I always have to be really smart about saving for that reason.
Looks like Zbrush added something new... similar to sculptris?
