The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind are pretty great. Awesome wizzardry and a little bit gruesome every now and then. Really nice character development.
Looove this series. Had it recommended to me by some random guy in a Chapters store and it easily became one of my favourites. Wizard's First Rule is the first one, if anyone's looking to get into it.
I haven't had a chance to get into a new series in a while (I might have to check out some of these suggestions, too!) but if you're ever looking for something lighter, the Xanth series by Piers Anthony is fun. It must have about a zillion books by now. I also enjoyed The Dragon & The George and Magic Kingdom for Sale, when I was younger.
Finished The Name of the Wind and am half way through The Wise Man's Fear. I love these books. A bit slow at times but overall great buildup and reward.
Great thread might have to check a few of these myself.
Just finished dance of dragons myself a few weeks back, couldnt put it down.
I highly recommend checking out a few of the videos from the people at westeros.org they picked up on a few of the details i missed. Like the new theory that Jon Snow may be Azor Ahai.
If you want some manly adventure check out the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burrows. While it takes place on Mars I wouldn't really classify it as Sci-Fi. One warning, they were written in the 1900's so some people might find the writing a bit archaic.
The best part is the majority of the books are public domain. Here's the free ebook downloads from The Gutenberg Project:

Also Neox mentioned it earlier and I also highly recommend the warlord chronicles by Bernard Cornwell, they are no ASOIAF but then nothing is.
