Xyla Studios : Making a simple Unreal Engine game for Steam!

Just so you know up front:

This Is A Job Posting In The United States
(Florida, or New Jersey - Other States also Acceptable)

_____________________________

A little background:
Xyla Studios LLC. is a small off-shoot project from the same people behind Motion9Studios LLC. and our many iPhone Games (some silly, yes, but profitable).

We've basically acquired some funding and are interested in getting out of the PC market. We're looking to move in to the Steam Market : Specifically we are interested in making a short, sweet, simple game.

This is a job for monetary compensation only (IE: we will only hire you if we plan to pay you). We aren't interested in any gimmicky "Pay when it's done" or "Unpaid Internship" blah blah blah. What we're looking for is talented, innovative people who either have or haven't had a lot of success in the past!

= = = = = What we're looking for (Innovators / Artists / Engineers):

+ + + + Innovators
What constitutes an "innovator" is someone with a knack for creating games. This person can either have artistic talent or knowledge of programing or software engineering using engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine.

If you have what you feel is an amazing, yet simple small-scale title which can be built on a budget of under $200,000 then we'd love to hear from you and if we like your idea you can be put in charge of a small team dedicated to making that dream become a reality!

What you'd get:

1. Money for doing something you love.
2. Credit for making a Steam Game that was your idea.
3. Continued work after the project is completed (updates, DLC, etc...)
4. The chance to come up with & create a game for release on Steam with funding!
5. Lastly depending on the amount of work you put in there's year-end bonuses to talk about which could be royalty-based!
6. Then after we're good and ready we can proceed to develop a AAA title next, possibly with your continued leadership, or advice.

This isn't a scam. If it sounds too good to be true please check out our past released games under the name Motion 9 Studios:
http://www.motion9studios.com

We are very eager to get into the PC Market, after we hit the #1 spot on iTunes we kind of didn't have anywhere else to go in mobile games (Save for maybe following in the shadow of Angry Birds for all eternity) so we're jumping into making some awesome games now.

Let us know if/when you're interested! Give us your Name, E-mail, or Phone Number and some work samples and/or a resume by sending an e-mail over to:

ian@motion9studios.com

+ + + + Artists

Minimum requirement:
Must have at least 1-5 years of experience in digital art, photo manipulation, 3D modeling, sprite sheet building, or other disciplinary equivalent.

We are interested in:
Experience with Unreal Engine or Gamebryo engine a huge plus. Maya or 3DS Max users are guaranteed an interview.

Warning:

If you cannot paint a replica of the cover of an Isaac Asimov book, Make a looping texture, Create a sprite sheet, or model a space ship in 3D using Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, ZBrush, or equivalent you need not apply.

What you need to know:
Motion 9 Studios LLC. is the biggest up-and-coming Floridian game company. Already we have been honored with several awards and our first launched title, Kinetic Balls, has been featured as the #1 app on the iTunes app store. We are not here for fun and games, though. This is a business. While we enjoy keeping a positive attitude about our work we are, at the end of the day, absolute professionals both as artists and engineers. As such we only want to take serious candidates who are willing to go the distance. Game designers do not have unions. They are expected to never complain about intense workloads or long hours. Low wages are also expected until after the title releases and only then if it is a success are wages increased proportionally to the bonus earnings and revenue. Last year, for instance, at Infinity Ward, another game company, after sales of Call of Duty were in each of the 500 employees received an $800,000 bonus. You, too, can earn money close to between a tenth and half of this if our title can be a marketable success. This success requires several core ingredients though:

1: It must be highly artistic. We are competing with the best artists in the country, as such you, too, must be the best.
2: It must be programmed very well (IE: have no primarily noticeable errors or bugs).
3: It must maintain a very high framerate, handling nearly 300 on-screen objects and still running at 30-60 FPS with only a single graphics card.
4: It must be very polished: IE: It needs to be user friendly, move and act as subconsciously expected, and appear very professionally tweaked.

Hours:
Work is 40 Hours a week paid, but you will probably be working 60 or more.

This is expected of this profession as it is an artistic/creative profession.

Personally the man writing this posting works about 90-100 hours on most weeks,

easily allotting for 9 hours of sleep a day.

Dress:
You can work in whatever clothing you want because we're going to mostly be
having you work and create from your own home studio or office. It's a great
tax write-off for you, and it saves the company money so more money at
the end of the day can go into your payroll. Who doesn't love being able to
work from home?

Meetings:
We hold meetings to check up on our employees progress every Thursday
and every Sunday. These are usually held in the evenings around 8-10 PM Eastern

so that people on the West coast and in India can join in. These meetings are
usually mandatory but some weeks you may not be expected to show up.
We use Gotomeeting software to conduct these meetings.

Travel:
You don't have to travel, ever. Just stay at home and work as hard as you can.
We want you to be as relaxed as possible so you can focus on being productive
as an artist or engineer within your own environment.
As we grow in size you may be expected to attend some of the major Conventions
being a game developer. Such as Gamescon, PAX East, E3, Comic Con, etc...

Your Future As a Developer:
We've all noticed something after working at Motion 9-
After 1 year of working in this industry you are going to notice something drastic
happen. Every single one of our employees gets 2-5 calls a week from different

companies like Time-Warner, Microsoft, Apple Inc, Google, Blue Cross Blue Shield,
and other industry leaders asking for employees with experience in game &
software development. Programming, Design, & Software development jobs
are some of the fastest expanding careers in the country, by working as a
developer and advertising yourself as one you will be asked, quite frequently,
by job recruiters to travel to various locations to conduct interviews. In a lot of
these cases the interviewers will also pay for your airline tickets or gas money.

Being an Artistic Engineer:

Those who hold talents in both software development and design will be more
likely to earn a position at Motion 9 and in the games industry in general. For the
sake of job security most game designers are not only talented artists but also
able to, at a minimum, write scripts to make particle effects or 2D or 3D object
movement and/or handle basic AI programming. This is especially handy when
working with tools like Flash CS5 or Scaleform as not only being able to animate
objects but also being able to apply Actionscript 2.0 and 3.0 to those objects is
necessary to make a game "Work".

How do we get started:

E-mail the following in a SINGLE e-mail to: ian@motion9studios.com

1.) In the e-mail header write: "ARTIST APPLICATION: (Your First Name) (Your Last Name)"

2.) Attach a portfolio containing your past work or examples of your talents.

3.) Send us the most updated version or your resume.
4.) If this is your first job in game or software development please participate in the "Entry-Level Challenge" listed below:

Entry-Level Challenge:
If you have not published or been a part of a team who have developed a game or
software in the past you can still showcase your skills to us by doing the following:

Pick one (or more) of the following challenges - Please note we want to see fresh, new, never before seen content :

A.) Use Flash, Unity, Objective C, or another tool at your disposal to create an animated sequence featuring 2 characters interacting and exchanging at least 3 lines of dialog. You can record these lines of dialog yourself or borrow them from any source.

B.) Use Flash, Unity, Objective C, or another tool at your disposal to create a fake dynamic web page with moving/animated buttons which sells pocket-sized items and trinkets. You give the site a name, you decide what products it is selling, and you animate and make working buttons which navigate between at least two (2 minimum) different pages. You can upload this web site and include it in your portfolio for free using a number of different sources.

C.) Create an animated character, object, or effect in 2D using Flash, MS Paint, Photoshop, or another equivalent tool at your disposal. You must not only send this animated item to us in the form of a GIF, SWF, or AVI (you only need to pick one format), but you also have to send us a SPRITE SHEET of this object with transparent background in GIF or PNG format. We recommend that you keep the sheet's grid equally spaced so if it's 5 frames horizontally make sure it's also 5 frames vertically.

D.) Create a simple piece of software using Java, C++, Objective C, Actionscript, or something equivalent without any necessary art that just shows two basic shapes which are able to collide with each other in some way. Physic simulations and interactivity are definitely a plus, here. For instance you could have a ball and a triangle. The ball could be picked up and rolled, and when placed on top of the triangle it could roll down one side of it like a ramp. Be sure to send us the file in a format that can run on a Mac or a PC (or in the Web Browser is using action-script). Again, Physics is definitely a plus but not necessary if you can find some other creative way to have two shapes interact using only code/scripting.

E.) Create a piece of software with several working buttons that navigate around an interface of at least 5 different screens. You could build this in Java, Objective C, C++, Actionscript, or even HTML. This interface may or may not feature artistic features. If it is a webpage make sure it features at least one visible/noticeable use of CSS, Javascript, Actionscript, HTML5, or some other dynamic web content equivalent.

F.) Write a simple 2D game with some interactivity. Animated characters using a sprite sheet are a plus but not necessary. In this 2D game all you have to do is have a basic shape that the user can interact with using the arrow keys or some other form of input. All this shape has to do is be able to move left, move right, and jump. Jumping, of course, is the most difficult part as it has to then come back down. Feel free to use another shape to define where the "ground" is. If you add in additional platforms and allow the shape to jump from one to the other and include animated characters and enemies you can jump on you're very likely to get hired on the spot.

G.) Create a texture which looks realistic but which was created from scratch either through procedural generation or you just used some brushes in Photoshop. This realistic looking texture (Such as asphalt, wood grain, or floor tiles) must be able to loop both horizontally and vertically. Creating this texture as an isometric tile is a plus but not necessary.

H.) Model a Space Ship or a character in 3D using Maya, 3DS Max, or Z Brush. If you are able to rig and animate that character that is also a plus, but it is not necessary for this challenge. We only need to see what you can do when modeling something in 3D. Send us JPEGs or PNGs of the renders (or AVIs/MPGs/Quicktime video if the character is animated) as well as any OBJ, MDL, or equivalent files.

+ + + + Engineers

Minimum requirement:

We are interested in:

Experience with Unreal Engine or Gamebryo engine a huge plus. Those who have published a video game or software title are guaranteed an interview.

Warning:

If you cannot move an object on a screen using only code you need not apply.
