Mushu Character

So I modeled mushu from mulan a few months ago for practice and now I'm thinking about revisiting it with some textures -



Obviously my paintover skills leave a lot to be desired but I was thinking it might be kind of cool to give him kind of a realistic/detailed look as opposed to the solid colors he has in the movie (like the center image).

Totally open to suggestions, any thoughts on this?

Only thing I'd say is that toon characters with super-realistic textures often look rather creepy.

I think you can still have a nice texture on there, but you should just approach it differently. Instead of having 50 ridges on his belly just have 8 or so big ones. Instead of painting each tiny scale, just do it in patches and, again, enlarge them. Avoid highlighting each scale equally and don't let the detail overpower the overall values and it should be fine. Better than leaving it in completely flat colors, I think.

The model looks really nice, by the way!

lolololol I think the responses here say it all, point taken. haikai, I think you're right about the texture being way too busy, I'll be sure to experiment with some less tedious styles soon.
