Ok so a few probably obvious (my apologies) UDK questions. Do you have to create a 2nd uv set for light mapping on static meshes? There's a 3d motive tutorial for this. I didn't know if you still had to do this with lightmass or not.

As for lightmaps, yes it's a good idea to always have one, or just auto-unwrap it in UDK for 2nd uv channel.
