So I've been a troll of this forum for a while and haven't posted much, but I figure I should get started.
This isn't where I wanted the end of this project to be, but I have found myself stuck and after working on this guy on and off for almost a year I need to just set him down. I learned a lot and hope to start a full character soon.
I'm using Laurens Corijn's "Xoliulshader" for viewport captures, but sadly, ATI and view port graphics don't get along very well, or this shader and Maya, and I can't have shadows which blows. I really love the way the shader functions though.

Not sure if you should do that or just use planes and alpha channel them for transparency while actually texturing them. Perhaps someone will more knowledge will chime in.
