Maya reference in the same scene file?

Hey, is it possible to reference a model like you would with an external scene except keep the master model in the scene. I would just use instances, but if you need to make edits to the model like combining geo with it it deletes the references. This isn't a problem with an external file since the transforms or stored independently of the mesh.

    Hmmm... not that I know of. I'll ask around. But I think that the reference editor needs that external file reference. I'd say instance, but yeah that would be a great feature.

    One approach may be instances combined with grouping. It would be hacky. But it might be worth a shot.

    I tried parenting the mesh under a locator and than instancing, but no luck it still deletes the model when combining the master with another model. So far my ghetto solution has to been to use locators that store the transform of each instance and cut and paste the values back when I need to change the geo, kind of a hassle.
