Transitioning Industrial Design modeling skills into game modeling?

Not sure if this is in the right subforum. If this belongs in General instead, mea culpa.

OK, so... I have a fresh BofS in Industrial Design degree, and I'm trying to figure out what I actually want to do with my life. I chose Industrial Design over Game Art because I love the idea of actually manufacturing things and creating physical objects, but... I still love video games, and I figure expanding my skillset from purely 3D Modeling for manufacturing to 3D Modeling for computer graphics, special effects, and especially video games would be fun and make me more marketable. (If you want to see my current profile or comment on it, it's available at http://bit.ly/androski )

Unfortunately, I'm not really sure where to start. I love 3D modeling--and not to toot my own horn, especially around here, but I'm relatively good at it--but the vast majority of my 3D modeling experience is with solid and surface modeling tools. (Solidworks, specifically.) I do have some experience with other modeling suites--I've done a bit of stuff in 3DSMax, Cinema4D and Lightwave in the past, but it's been a while and I've got a lot to re-learn.

I'm thinking a TF2 weapon would be a relatively simple (yet still ambitious, given my skill level) way to teach myself a new modeling package and start learning to deal with the complexities of integrating a model into a game. I'm not expecting you guys to hand-hold me along the way, but I do have one big question staring me in the face--what 3D package should I be looking at? Blender? Lightwave? Modo? Maya? Something else altogether?

Thanks in advance.
