Appleseed is amazing. Great designs in it, and I love the characters. I hope you'll have fun with this, and finish it as it's a great design, and will make something cool for your folio.
If you've never read the Appleseed mangas, the second Appleseed movie is great. It's pretty brainless compared to the first one, and the mangas. Not to say the first, and the mangas are "cerebral" or anything, but deeper than the typical anime script of the second.
Really looking forward to more updates on this. Good luck
You always do such great HSM I would love if you could maybe do a recording of this one so we can pick up on some of the tips and tricks you do on your more organic H.S.M.
Overall looking great so far, expecting to see more soon!
Great start so far - very clean modeling with no visible pinching. I would love it if you post some wires every once in a while, or like seforin mentioned, do a video timelapse of your workflow.
there are lots of video tuts out there that prob be better in general modeling no point in making another
but about my way of work, it changes with every shape/model, each time i have a different way and feels right to go with
heres an example im using with this one, i noticed im using alot of the FFD boxes on that one to keep a accurate consist flow of the curves, so what i did so far on most of the shapes here is using basic shape and then play with the ffd untill it shapes right
same for the head, i modeled it first as a flat side view, extruded the borders to the side and used the ffd
if u wonder why i have lots of polys/loops, is just in case ill decide to add more deails as part of the shape
Nice work, Im a big Shirow fan so makes me very happy to see his designs being given such love.
BTW exo-suits are generaly called 'Landmates' in Appleseed - although the ones the assault-troopers use are 'Orc' suits that dont have the extra set of arms - heres the heroin (wearing Orc suit and in front of Landmate) and hero inside a similar vehicle getting ready to drop -
Desert-Island-Designs : thanx , i was wondering about the side of that thing, i though its like a drone or something but then i saw the minigun in front, didnt make much sense, so its like a spaceship?
do u have any more refs of it?
Alberto Rdrgz, i used turbosmooth (1) and then i use the cut tool and did them manually :poly124:
the second appleseed has a scene where they drop landmates out of one of these in a chase scene- might help you with sorting the utility of this thing out.

After cutting the lines in, do you extrude the line inwards, and then split it with chamfer as seen in the image below? This seems to work on most objects, but can sometimes do some wonky things when turbosmooth is applied.

awesome, ill check that out, maybe i can find it on youtube

this will work too but i use different way, cut line, EXTRUDE - with the extrude tool u can spread the outer lines and shrink the middle one, the i chamfer the outer ones
its better with round shapes, cause than u can extrude the cut evenly all around
I can't help myself from asking, what were you creating in the other topic you made? It looked like a robotic hand.
yea thats is the big project im working on for a long time, its a secret project O_o
what i do now is just some relaxing time from that project lol, was looking for something small and cool i can finish quickly, so i ended up doing that bee
Often times what separates a good model and a great model like this comes down to how well you execute your bevels and lines. Right now its all over the board.
In some areas you have blobby melted plastic looking edges
Other spots you have much cleaner looking lines, but then the consistency and size varies quite a bit, some much too sharp.
Overall it looks like sections of the model of this were modeled completely without regard to other parts, or the model as whole. The modeling style on the front looks very different from that on the rear, for example.
The biggest thing you should try to do is keep your bevels, lines and details consistent and confident. Avoid lazy intersections as well(you can do some tricks with floating geo on the more complex intersections).
Take a look at this:
A. We have boring undefined bevels, no real interest, and the meshes are just intersected. They do not look like they belong together.
B. Thick well defined bevels, meshes fit together.
So yeah, just work on your edge treatment, its holding you back here on this asset.
Another thing worth noting, the whole rear section looks like you simply looked at the concept, modeled the basic shape, and then painted lines on it. It doesn't look like the separate elements are individual parts, there is no variance in height or surface angle or anything, so it feels very flat. In addition to that, the edges are a bit too hard, and that messes with the scale there too, and again is just generally inconsistent.
The reason it like that right now is because of the mix up
At first I thought it's a drone kind of thing, now I see its much bigger
So Im changing the edges now, that's why some parts looks different than others
Now half of the parts there are wrong haha
It's looking good,
A good way to make the bevels consistem(something I first thought about after I finished my marauder project) is to write down the extrude and bevel values, so you can replicate the exact same thing on the entire model, thereby giving it a consistent look.

with or without the bumps? O.o
shape isnt perfect though, i r not happy with it =\
gonna fix it later on

not much done for today
was at the cinema watching transformers for the 4th time O_O
:P
more wip stuff tomorrow
:poly115:
transformers rules! and that specially for you
O_O
looks at that sexy ass shes got now..
n88tr, yea going with a round style trying to avoid hard edges as much as i can

The Manga, second issue I think, has some interiors of an Osprey and I think the movie start has a little more of the interiors.
Now find some refs of Bonaparte and make him
thats what i usually do
thanx
haha, working on something bigger, maybe sometime later O_O
