I imported a DAE file into 3ds max 2011 and the tris show up and I just want to see the model in quads, how can I turn the triangle view off?

If it's showing up as triangles when converted to a editable poly then the model has probably been triangulated.

If that's the case you need to quadrify the mesh again.
It's in the Graphite Modeling Tools > Geometry (All) > Quadrify.
