Topology... Well, deformation and lighting seems to be the main purpose for good topology. Deformation for sculpting so that you can get details and topology so that shit bend properly. And I say that you could probably take any tutorial on modelling and learn something about topology, don't really see how topology is limited to any software package. Try skinning and animating a character and you'll feel the importance of good topology, my five cents.
