I have no idea what a 'sonic screwdriver' looks like you should post a concept or a pic.
Straight away It hits me that your edges are way way to sharp to justify baking them. Fine sharp edges wont show in a normal map, its a good idea to add some extra bevelling to your models even if its 'off model'. Modeling stuff like this is often a case of making it work for baking rather than religiously following a concept.
Obviously im not advocating throwing the design out the window but certain deviations will pay off when baking and read much better when rendered on the low poly.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm ashamed to say I forgot about the problems with hard edge baking. Will get to correcting this ASAP.
Had a crack at it today and toned down the sharp edges, and made them more "blobby".
