edge padding in photoshop?

Hey-yall.

Recently our studio has be cranking on particle fx- and a big part of that has been making fx sheets.

Something that would help out our mipping greatly is the ability to pad the pixels on the alpha mapped edges with pixels of the same color.

anyone know anything?

In PS I use gausian blur a few times. Then I bucket fill the layer.

But this is just for the base colour

i use this. just remember that you need to make the areas you want to fill with padding transparent first.

OR flatten your image and put mask in the alpha channel. Then select all r, g, b and A channels and apply Xnormal dilation.

Wouldn't selecting the alpha, and then expand the selection in the select menu?

People mostly use the padding tool in whatever they're baking with. Marmoset, Substance, Maya, Max, etc.

If I need to add padding in PS, I use Solidify.

@Eric Chadwick Does Solidify do more than the free one that comes with Xnormal? Back when I had to manually dilate stuff, that's what I used.

Actually i asked because i want to try generate haircards with maya - arnold, so there is actually no "baking" process here

Solidify wouldn't work in that case with haircards rendered against black background. It would dilate the black pixels on the translucent edges. So don't forget to do un-premultipled rendering or just divide  32bit exr color output by 32bit alpha in some linear environment like Blender compositing nodes.

Could be done in Photoshop too but I forgot how I did it there already. Probably just gamma  0.4545 for color layer before dividing alpha layer  in the layer stack.

Or maybe "alpha" layer also has to be de-gammed by 0.45 too.

Good point, anti-aliasing and pre-multiply makes dilation more difficult.

Here's an example with non-AA UVs. I prefer the more even results I get with Solidify.

Xnormal has a maximum dilation of 32 pixels, while Solidfy does it all in one click. But in the end it's really just an aesthetic choice, both mip about the same.

On my system, Solidify is considerably faster for big textures.

Does anyone see a difference between Solidify A, B and C? Seems to do the exact same thing, but might depend on the nature of the texture.

Yeah I did notice a difference, and chose C. Can't recall why though. It might have weighted the falloff? It's been a long time since I tested.

Thanks! The description sounds like they would do different things as well, but I overlaid them in difference mode and they were identical. (PS CS 5 and the 64 bit filters, downloaded today or yesterday). Maybe it's my configuration, maybe my map, maybe they introduced some mistake in a newer version.

I don't use UE4 but that looks like a more clever approach, and should fix some artefacts with normal maps aswell.

He doesn't use a simple 2d expand, like photoshop, and i assume, bakers do, but some slope extrapolation.
