Hey to all,

Here's the gist, in a couple of day, me and my friends from my Lab are going to to a small meeting/tour (whatever you want to call it) at a studio, it's not a formal interview or anything, just an organized tour of sorts.

My question is to you guys, what is the etiquette to such occasions? I'm not talking about wear (although that would help) but more on the level of questions I could ask or they could ask us, and just generally, how one should carry themselves around the place.

Or is it not a good idea to ask questions of ANY nature in the tour and I should just lay low?

Cheers and ciao.

-do not speak unless spoken to
-when a developper looks you into the eyes, look away, preferably to the ground
-keep your hands to the side of your body and visible at all times

Peris covered most of the important points but I would like to add that usually you can't chew gum (spit it out at the door, there's usually a spot on the ground either right inside or outside the studio.. trust me, you'll see it), and you should probably arrive equipped with a lot of one or five dollar bills.

other than that, have fun and try not to embarrass everyone that you're with.

Like women in Europe, it is customary to greet game developers with a 'kiss' to either side of the cheek. This is more of a mwah mwah air-kiss and not like a romantic thing, and doing it wrong will get you stares.

Game developers require escorts to the restroom - there is a studio-level buddy system that typically involves an experienced mentor and an unexperienced mentee - as non developers you will become temporary mentees. If you see one wandering towards the gents, break off from the group and follow him, preparing his toilet paper/paper towels/tissues for him in advance. When he is finished he will then return the favor.

It is important to note that the developer will have already washed his hands so you mustn't put him in a position where he will actually soil his hands so you must open/close all doors for him, etc.

It is important to say goodbye with a firm, but moist, handshake. When they present their hand, deftly lick your palm, transferring a medium (neither juicy nor dry) amount of saliva before immediately engaging. A firm handshake is not a crushing handshake - you are most likely familiar with providing a firm grip to an appendage of your own - treat their hand the same - you're not trying to kill their hand, merely leave it aroused.

There are three appropriate positions/poses for your hands for the duration of the time, and you cannot use the same for both hands:

    1) hanging limply along your side, disengaged from any pocket, unclenched and loose.
    2) two inches beyond the wrist joint deep in your pocket - this should cant your shoulders slightly.
    3) the 'napoleon' - hand gently across the midsection, fingers straight and together. If you are wearing a buttoned shirt, the middle and ring fingers must sit gently inside the button line. Only these fingers, and not the others. If you do not wear your shirt buttoned (ie, going for the layered style) it is required to button the midsection button to properly rest your two fingers upon that button.

If one asks you to dance, you should always reply with "yes, my liege/milady"
when dancing make sure to let the developer lead, as he/she will know the moves, and you will be learning as you go.
Its okay if you make a few mistakes, just laugh it off, this could increase the chemistry between you and generally lighten the mood.
If after the song has ended, the developer asks you over to his/her cubicle, your in! Prepare for the night of your life!

If a developer approaches, lie down on the ground and stay perfectly still. The developer should soon lose interest and go away by himself. Don't try to follow him/her under any circumstances!!

At no point should you attempt to shoot a game developer without proper training. Failure to do so will result in angering them, and they will not like you while they're angry. When they stop being angry feelings of resentment may remain.

i am assuming the inhabitants of the studio are human beings like yourself.

so just act like a natural rational human being.

they are just people you know, use some common sense.

as for Q/A, if they get you all to sign an NDA then they can answer some stuff if they want. what can you ask ? anything! as long as it is a rational question.

@Ghost: What happens if I do hit them? Can I bang their jaw and flail my arms as the dominant male in the group?

@MM: Oh, OK, so they might make me sign an NDA, nice to know so I don't freak out (I usually freak out when paperwork is involved).

i think the real question is, what are your intentions for the visit ?

to get a job there or to get an idea of a typical game dev workplace ?

based on your intentions, formulate your questions.
