learning how to do hand painted textures
imo for a crate a 1024² texture is far enough, so you wont get lost in details wich wont be visible in the end.
now that we got this settled you should start adding ambient occlusion and sctratches.
so ambient occlusion means that in all the inward facing corners of your model, your texture should be darker. http://wiki.polycount.com/AmbientOcclusionMap?highlight=%28%5CbCategoryTexturing%5Cb%29
next thing to add would be scratches.
normaly crates like this are in often reused and treadet roughly, so some lighter scratches at the edges should give this a more believable feeling.
theese are just the realy simple things, but its where you should start. there are a lot more techniques to learn.
Heres orb for some good stone reference i found this really useful when learning hand painted!
have fun and enjoy it
Oh and i have a porfolio website up and running

Check it out and tell me what you think
also, there's probably no need to give each side unique uvw space, if you overlap some of them and cut it down to 4 sides then you'll be able to use the space more efficiently.
