I stumbled across this admittedly incomplete flow chart of game studios since Atari.

It got me thinking, modern studios function in a vastly different way than the original ones did. Both the delegation of responsibility and division of labor while not rigidly defined by any means are pretty similar across the industry.
I'm curious how you think this model came into being.
Was it borrowed from Hollywood studios, and film, or did it largely evolve on its own.
Also what similarities & differences do you guys see between film studios and game studios?
Edit:
Wikipedia also has an interesting page on industry practices:

It also points out there being quite a few difference between eastern and western studio models. Makes me curious where the east got thier model for the modern studio, if they were just mimicking some of the western studios or doing thier own thing.

As we are now seeing alot of Artists being placed into a niche job skill. (Factory ethic influence)
Whereas comparing to early game development - where you were labelled a "Game Developer' being involved in most or all aspects.
I suggest watching the videos floating around on startups : ID , Volition etc.
You can cleary see all workers being involved with the whole company, money schedules and worfklows. While comparing them to now - when they are now 100's in man power.
I cant speak from the perspective of the film industry at all... :S
