Here are the pics I promised. I forgot we used 8 pixel pads for the 512x512s, any less and we had bleeding. We had this hand-painted cartoon-shaded look, and we wanted the blending between the tiles to also be in the same painted style, instead of the usual vertex-alpha blend. So the Lead Artist and I worked up this approach...
and lastly always research on your stuff, like I used search keywords such as tile, loop, texturing, modular, low poly, uv mapping,... I always wonder why its so hard to search or get after the right keywords for so many people *shrug* . Maybe we should add some sticky or tutorials on how to research on your own and get the best out of it- like some nifty google tricks.

A general 'keywords for dummies' type of guide would work very well. Many of my friends don't know what Vertex-Painting is, and many more don't know you can apply materials to it when creating shaders...
Which reminds, does the Polycount Wiki have a keyword catalogue?
even for that there are techniques on how to retrieve those words or knowledge/ overview- its called research.
People sometimes get angry thinking that often people are lazy slackers (because they don't research and rather depend on others) but I think its a clear lack of skills, skills that should be essential.
I might be able to write up some techniques I use around the google platform for example (gImages, google, gTranslate, imageSearch, additional search commands, sort by subject, picasa search,..) and maybe some strategies on how to break up a search to get what you think you need or want.
