modernOZed

Hey everyone!

I'm working on a modern reinvention of several characters from the Wizard of Oz. This is a personal project, so feedback would be greatly appreciated! :)

so far I have started my initial concept for the Tin Woodsman character. I plan on reinventing the 4 main characters, and possibly eventually some secondary characters.

I will update as soon as I can!

Awesome concept, love the shape of him. Good luck with the modelling. What are you aiming for as far as textures go, next gen, hand painted..? :p

I know Toto is just a normal Toto right now, (just kinda angry.) I may reinvent him as well, not sure yet.

I hope to explore several texturing styles. I may test some photo sources but I do plan for it to be hand painted in the end, possibly in a very graphic style.

    Synopsis

After playing "Alice Madness Returns," I was inspired to make my own reinvnention, only with the wonderful world of Oz. This game could simply be called "Dorothy" and likewise be a more exaggerated telling of the story, based in a modern setting.

I've decided to give the characters a sort of class-based role, taking reference from Borderlands: The Tinman is the melee/tanking class, The Lion is the stealth/rogue class, the Scarecrow the ranged/hunter, and Dorothy the support or a sort of healer.

The following is a little character background for the Oz world I'm imagining.

Tinman: Axe and Armor. The Tinman's melee axe will be upgradable in stages, each with a different special ability. He will also gain several armor types that will be necessary to equip during certain encounters.

Lion: Claws and Stealth. The Lion will gain increased speed and longer stealth as he levels up. His claws and tail will be his main weapons. The Lion is easily spooked, incoming damage could cause him to flee, so he must be careful to not be targeted.

Scarecrow: Crows and Extinguisher. The Scarecrow will have control over crows from afar, and be able to send them to attack enemies or cause distractions. He will also be quipped with a fire extinguisher that could be used to both put out fires that are threatening the group or to clear a path. It could also be used as a double-jump mechanic since the scarecrow is light and made of straw, he could access some higher unreachable areas.

Dorothy: Toto and Supersoaker. Dorothy can deal damage through her pet Toto, whom she can command, as well as her trusty witch-melting supersoaker. She will also have her basket which can carry items for later use, for example, the Tinmans oilcan.

    Starting a Lion..

One thing I noticed about some of the other reinventions of the Oz characters was the artist uniquely reinvents the Tinman, Dorothy, and the Scarecrow, but most often, the Lion is left just a Lion. I wanted to stay away from the typical 'Asland' sort of lion.. (After reviewing the film, the one feature of the Lion that made him stand out was the fact that he stood on his hind legs, so I decided to make him very humanoid.)

These are lookin' sexy. I do miss the lion's mane, though. Is that something you've thought about or tried incorporating more prominently?
