Hey everyone. I've been working on a high poly cat365cl off and on over the past two or three weeks to practice modeling and tackle something that has a lot of components to it. It is, of course, inspired by the dozer tutorial. I also rigged the arm/hydraulic pistons and hoses for kicks and giggles.
I'm going to start working on some smaller props and such to work on my texturing skills and post them here as I go along. Crits are always welcome. :poly142:

My first normal bake was on an ar-15 model I made. It was so terrible, as I had no concept of what smoothing groups were or where uv seams should be. I tried remodeling the high and low multiple times and even hand applied smoothing groups to every individual polygon on the model to try to fix the issues. It was quite a nightmare. So, don't be discouraged if your first bakes aren't perfection.
I made a barrel today...
I'm going to try to make some more realistic textures after this one. The stuff I've done so far lacks any interesting detail.
My first ever digital painting study...I should do more.
The 3d stuff is all slick and super clean and i can't really offer crits. As for the study, that is cool! You do need to do more of these, for sure! Don't skip on the little details, they're usually where you learn the most:
Why isnt the table tilted or in perspective? Where's the subtlety on the reflections on the bottom of the... whatever it is, near the legs? And speaking of that, where are the legs!? With all your colors laid out like this it'd only take like 5 minutes to alt click and knock in some new forms, you should finish it up! it's worth it!
I used to draw with pencil or pastel, but never learned how to use photoshop for digital painting (my college photoshop class avoided digital painting all together... :poly127: ). So, I just found ctrl+paint and gobbled everything up that I could. The gas tank was much wanted blending practice for me.
Here it is updated. Added in the little attachments and changed the proportions of the overall form. Still ignoring the wall and wood though. Maybe I'll work on hand painting some wood next.
I took some print screens along the way to show the major steps. Basically went blockout colors>blockout shapes>continue to refine shapes and add details>pump up the highlights a bit>post painting adjustments. The panels of the wood aren't in the same places sometimes because I offset the textures after different passes to make it tilable.
Here's my attempt at hand painting textures before I actually learned how to use photoshop properly...
So, I'm happy my recent attempt shows improvement.
I saw a bunch of environment art tests popping up before I moved, so I painted a tiling roof texture, using photosource for the pattern, and redid the wood a little bit...maybe over did the sharpening? :poly124:
I also jumped into zbrush and started learning that. Followed along with the tiling texture tutorial over at 3DMotive.
First attempt:
It's a little meh and a few things didn't work well for tiling, so I went back and resculpted/textured it (also used orbs crack brush, which is pretty neat).
Here's the second attempt results:
That's it for now! Maybe I should actually use some of these tiling textures for something some day... :poly142:
I specially like the tileable textures.
For the past year (or more?), I've put 3d art on the backburner and didn't make any art while I tried to figure out where I wanted to go in life. Blah blah blah life struggles yada yada. Anyway, I'm back and focused more on 2d art for now. The only thing I know is that I like to look at art and I want my own sketch folder to look as good as my inspiration folder in the future. So, I'm going to make a habit of artin' it up every day. Some pieces will be better than others, but with enough practice and knowledge I hope improvement will be the trend here.
I'll start off with some recent sketches.
Also, has anybody tried...flash cards... to help them out with anatomy? Muscle names are just not sticking in my brain. I'll make some and see how they work out for me.
More unexciting stuff for today. The hands and people are 2 minute sketches. Less than that when the layers start adding up and my computer stalls with every stroke. It's a good motivator to keep the lines to a minimum though.
I had a bout of insomnia the other night and when I came home from work the next day I fell asleep in my chair before I could be productive -_- . Here's something from today. My figure and face portrait practices looked like hideous monsters, so I'll keep those safely locked away.
Great style
Keep it up !
Another meh day.
This guy is a wip. I'll see how far I can take him tomorrow though.
Stopped working on this guy as he reminded me way too much of a krogan.
I'm also working on the 2D Noob Challenge.
First idea was some basic wall storage. Now I'm leaning towards some sort of morgue storage containers to house bodies. I'd like to do a container that's not stuck to a wall though...
I've been trying out some selection masks and messing with colorizing my black and white sketches. I would like to paint in colors to start with, but this is pretty fast if I didn't have anything in mind beforehand.
More sketches.
Some more sketchies.
Here's something I worked on for the past couple days, inspired by some John Bauer illustrations I stumbled on.
I've been messing around with a couple different brushes. Feels good.
My computer has also been crashing every time I go to save lately. Doesn't feel so good.
