Does Max have a way of, when sub-object mode (say, faces) to select visible only? So if I am viewing a mess of triangles and drag a marquee box it will only select faces visible to me? Ignore backface isn't quit the right solution here.
Not sure if its what you need since you say you want to have a marquee selection. Script just selects all faces visible according to your view. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5274623/visibleFaces.ms
Eh rereading what you said and this is probably not what you were looking for XD
that's a very bold statement. i don't think i have ever had to select only visible faces.
It completely depends on the stuff you're making and the workflow you use to follow. Most part of modelers have their favorite/usual package and adopt their workflow to it. So keeping this in mind it is not surprising that you never wanted to select only visible faces - if you use to "select through" a model and then deselect undesired polys. It's ok if it doesn't irritate you and doesn't slowdown you work.
You know after I've tried such kind of selection in XSI and MAYA I started to wonder - how I was doing without it!? Try it - just for yourself

Illusion Catalyst got that as far as i remember...
Edit: There is a script on SyncViews side which does that.
