I have a few of beauty shots of the Brawl trophies for your perusal. As well as a bit of information as a lot of people have inquired as to what these are.
They are 3d printed in a hard thermal plastic. It's similar in properties to the stiff plastic parts of a PS3/Xbox controller. They are not very heavy and will break if you drop them repeatedly cause you weren't paying attention. [facepalm] A prototyping place here locally, Austin, Texas, worked with me to get them printed using their equipment. Once I had the raw prints in hand, I hand sanded them down to as smooth as I could get them and painted them with some extremely temperamental mirror finish metallic paints. I can't tell you how many times I painted these things to get a decent surface. It's been an interesting project for sure. While everyone else has been working on the contest or participating on it, I've been scrubbing on these little guys. And a thank you needs to go out to divii as well. I concepted the trophies and handed it off to him to produce the model that I had printed for us. It's nice having minions. ^_^
It would make a great contest to allow polycounters to buy one of these, customize it, and paint it.

If it ever interests you, it should be straightforward to use one of those as a bronze or aluminum cast with the silicon covering method. Probably could get a local foundry to do such. Though not sure on costs with commercial enterprises.
The basic idea is they would add air flowage pipes with wax to the areas that need it (like the teeth and eyes. Then cover it in the soup a few times and let it dry. Stick it in a high temperature oven for a few hours to burn out the plastic. Then the hollowed version they would use to poor the bronze in. After it cooled, they break it open and cut/sand off the piping.
oxy: I am very familiar with mold making and wax casting from a previous life. i might just be aiming in that direction tho i promise nothing and i wont pimp it out untill its done..
and i considered shapeways, but i managed to get a better deal locally. Plus i really wanted to see the machines and the samples before i gave them the job.
Ha, I like these little guys they are awesome, good work!
You made an official polycount green one for you didn't you.
They really work well as trophies, very nice.
yeah, sanding and painting those can be a real pain (especially the ones with wax based support material, which means they're coated in oil).
great job.
While it's always nice to get a prize when you are not expecting anything (I can't wait to get my bronze greentooth).
It's even better when it happens twice !
I did get some nice t-shirts and a graphic card from Epic Game for achieveing my 3rd place in the UDK ~
so thanks again polycount, and thanks Epic Game !
The funny thing is that I get more prizes in a polycount contest where there is supposely nothing to win than with the unearthly challenge where I was supposed to get something ! xD
I sent the first two out to the US winners. The UK and Russian winners will go out tomorrow. I need to pack them in a larger box so that Fed Ex can attach all the necessary paperwork to each one.
All trophies have been sent. The UK and NC guys can expect it by mid next week. The Moscow package will get there in the first week of July. That's the furthest I've ever shipped anything, ever. Most expensive too XP. All should have their individual tracking infos so they can each sit at home on that day and wait for the FedEx truck.

Was the black mouthpiece added in at a later stage or something? In some shots, they seem to be completely hollow, in some not.
They all look hollow to me. You can see the light from the eyes shining inside of them.
Great job!

Nice job. Did you manage to paint onto the interior, too?
