hey guys,
I've been working on some weapon sculpts lately and worked up a process for woven/braded straps for handles or whatever so I thought I'd share.
enjoy!
In the past I've used max to create a flat tileable shape with splines set to rectangle. Then bend or skinwrap (using slideknit or MoPKnit) to get an instance of the woven pattern into the shape I need.
The cool thing about this method is that you can continue to work on the flat version and the wrapped/bent version updates. You can also render out masks for each layer of leather.
I'm not saying one way is better than the other, they're all tools in the Ol toolbox. This is just an alternative way and how I did the braid on this axe.
I also baked and blended cavity, height and AO for both the flat version and the bent version and combined them to make the final materials.
hey Mark, thanks! I definitely considered similar processes while keeping things zbrush-centric. Like using the tiling 2.5d method and applying different material passes to a clean cylindrical unwrap etc. But that didn't feel as organic. If anything, this method worked out well for on-the-fly sculpting(see also instant gratification).

Perfect Chinese fingertrap tut!
Seriously tho, quick and easy. Nice workflow, and thanks for sharing
