I'm having trouble in creating a over-exposed look in Max. In another word, to make part of the diffuse texture brighter than its own.
I tried the following:
make material 100 self-illuminating
use composite map for diffuse
put diffuse map on the base layer of the composite map
put light map in multiply mode on 2nd layer
put light map in overlay mode on 3rd layer with a reduced opacity
That's the closest I can get but still not close enough to the original lighted scene. Any help?

I don't know if you could mimic it with a composite map, but if it's only for display, you could use xoliul's shader here :
http://www.laurenscorijn.com/viewportshader and set the lightmap multiply to 2 (or more to boost the effect).
Also, you need to divide the lightmap luminosity by 2 or it will be overbright. You can simply do it by putting on top a black layer a 50% opacity in photoshop.
In the resulting map, everything above the midle gray will brighten the diffuse texture, everything under will darken it.
