Hi all,
I'm going to be starting to work on my portfolio soon and I'm wondering which type of project would work best. I'm a bit of a jack of all trades, I know how to model characters to the point I could probably land a job at a lesser studio, I can animate a bit too so that might help. But if there was a weak part in my skill set it would be characters.
I lean toward environment art because I have a passion for architecture and I love creating spaces for players to run around in. I know Unity and UDK pretty well and I've messed around with source but unless I plan to apply at Valve I'm not sure there is much use in using their engine, plus its a little dated and clunky...
So here are my options as I see them, there could be more that I'm not thinking of, but I'm wondering what would be the best next step:
1) Pick a scene from a game and recreate it, hoping to improve it in some way.
2) Hunt around for some reference and piece something together myself that looks and feels like it's from a game. Maybe some concept art that was never used?
3) Work on rounding out my skill set by working on a few characters and polish them up to a level that I could land a job.
I have about 3-4 hrs per day I can work on my next project, if that helps.
There could be some other options.
