Had an email an hour ago from someone on these boards, saying they'd seen my profile here and, because I didn't seem to have a website (incorrect, posted both in my profile and signature), they were offering me their web design services.
I didn't give it much thought and replied with the URL to my site and some good luck wishes.
But after sitting with it on my mind, and my suspicious brain working on it a bit, it seems strange to me that the obvious existence of my site was counterpoint to his reason for emailing me. Moreover, Googling the name in his email address didn't give me anything. Curious, for a person offering web design services, no?
Anyone else get an email like this? Could it be some kind of scam?
Might be innocent. Might be a genuine case of not seeing any trace of me having a portfolio. Just wanted to put it up here in case it isn't.

And we all have visible website links in our profiles and signatures.
Hmmmm
You would think that anyone who is an amazing web designer looking for work would link you to some of his work also... especially if he's phishing not providing a link for rubes to click is full of fail, so who knows he might be legit. But my skepticism senses are tingling...
"Jeff Hofferski" (Jack off'er? seems like a joke name?), obviously not good enough for google to recognize him?
Edit: For the record, I got it too. Check the email header, it's coming from a mailing list.
yeah me too. Plus got another one saying he saw my profile on evermotion lol
Anyone need a...website making? The reason why I'm asking is I'm a web designer that makes amazing websites!
Though I did learn my lesson trying to fool those nigerian princes.
Why dose no one like me...
What do i win?
but it cant be a spambot, as i mailed a few times back and forth with "him" and he replied to it, but not in a mechanichal way...
but he said he got mine from 3dtotal.com, not polycount internal
It does make you wonder, what is the point of this spam? Do they hope that someone will actually want a website?
Strangest scam spam ever.
those emails where everything else than generic...
also he stated he didnt want any money for that...
And a follow up:
Baned
Bane
Etymology:
Middle English, from Old English bana; akin to Old High German bano (“death”).
Noun:
- A cause of misery or death; an affliction or curse,
- A killer, murderer, slayer, (obsolete)
- Poison, especially any of several poisonous plants. (dated)
No thanks Jeff, I'd rather avoid working with anything oblivious/obnoxious when I can.
He just says he makes nice websites lol
He's right, you just got Baned. He's an admin:
Exactly what I was thinking when I read his reply :P
I hear he makes amazing websites though.
It's more plausible than Nigerian princes giving you money.
Edit: Good news, the kid says he'll sue PC for defamation of character or something.
Can you post the link to his site? :P
Kudos.
Also, good advice from kat, although it would probably be difficult to apply anything to the kid since he's definitely not using his real name (he claimed that in one of his e-mails to me). So, you'd have to be able to locate him, and that's a little more challenging. Best I could come up with is that he's in Egypt, which might be wrong, but I don't care.
The thread won't be going anywhere but I will ask you of one thing: Try and not belittle the guy for anything outside of his business practices.
To be fair though, most people do have their emails shown publicly here. Dont think hes hacking.
