Light maps and vertex colors

Hi folks

I am trying to learn more about light map and vertex color lighting after coming across the Polycount wiki on lightmaps:

Can anyone correct my assumptions which I am sure is wrong?

You create lightmap lighting by creating a secondary UV map from your mesh, and baking the lighting information in the environment onto your texture. I am guessing that because the lighting is baked into the texture, its not very good if you are instancing it alot as the lighting would be "wrong"? (mostly for unique meshes?)

Vertex color lighting is based on RBG information of your vertices, and you (manually?) paint in the meshes to change the shade.
