I have to say thats a really good first prop. there are a few tricks you can use when you first start out, such as ao bakes and cavity maps, that can really help your texture pop.

If i were you i would look to add more age(rust and grunge) and damage (bullet dents) etc etc. Overall great first prop.

They usually dont have that "Cap" on the tips, they are mostly barriers made with L shaped Pieces of metal.

Great first start! I'm going to write you a list of everything you should look into to help you learn the important stuff quickly. If you learn how to do all these things then you should be well on your way. As well when completing a process, if it takes to long, there is probably a faster way to do it.

How to use the: Cut, Remove, Connect, Extrude, Bevel, Bridge, Weld tools in 3DsMax

Hard Surface Modelling: fantastic tutorial (HIGHLY RECOMMEND): http://vimeo.com/10941211

All forms of Unwrapping including Pelt

Research into different types of maps that can be applied to objects.

Using layer masks within Adobe Photoshop

This is all stuff I wish I'd learnt in my first year at University.
