Hi folks, simple question but its driving me crazy. Looked all over the interweb.
How do you snap a vertex along one axis to another vertex? For example, I would extrude a series of oddly shaped faces, but I want them to align in the Y axis.
In Maya, you can turn on vertex snapping and use the move tool to middle mouse click on a secondary vertex so the original vertex lines up in one particular axis.
I hope my question makes sense.

A trick you can use to get it to snap quickly is to simply click on a movement axis to focus it, and then hit "x" to temporarily disable the gizmo. Then you can simply click on the vertex you want to move, then drag over to the target vertex you want to snap it to and it should only move on that axis.
I dunno if they have a Max script that makes this more efficient but I guess this will do for now

I know the axis constraint thing can be a bit finicky, but that's what you have quad menus for. If you take the time to set them up and use them frequently, then it can really speed up your workflow.
This will align to X, Y, Z anything you have selected. Combine it with constrain to get more control as well.
