Yeah I've been following the youtube videos of this for a while, and it looks super powerful but I am still a bit confused - there is not a single screenshot of the app itself, or instructions on how to plug it to a default Max Biped skeleton, and so on.

You are the one who uploaded the video, right ? So, could you please provide more info ? It's all pretty vague ...

woot! motion capture without skin tight black mocap suits.

Pior, they have some tutorials on their website. This one has some nice info:

    http://www.ipisoft.com/documentation/user_guide/iPiStudioHelp.html
To export animation with default iPi Studio skeleton, use “Export Animation” from “File” menu.

You can also export in 3d MAX Biped format and in iClone format using corresponding menu items.

To transfer your motion to a different rig, use “Import Target Character” menu item to import target rig.

Supported rigs in this release are:

Valve Biped from HalfLife2 Human SDK

    Endorphin default character

    Poser default character

Any custom biped rigs (use motion transfer profile editor to adjust your rig).

i don't know this tool specifically but usually there's a fair bit of cleanup work required for mocap data before it gets passed to the animators.

just don't expect hopping around in front of a kinect sensor will somehow give instant awesome data you can just pop in the animation mixer of your CG package. there's quite the tech effort going into cleanup, rigs and retargeting before the data looks halfway presentable and can be used by an animator.

    just saying.

Well maybe this package actually takes care of the smoothing ?
Only one way to find out - might gonna get a Kinect today!!

smoothing i think is just one part of the work involved. as far as cleanup goes i've seen more mouseclicks devoted to filling out gaps in the capture resulting from marker-overlap or obstruction and stopping the feet from sliding and jittering all over the floor.
i was only watching a colleague doing this though. and the captures he worked on regularly involved multiple actors, props and sets. i think he's capturing a certain hobbit these days. ;)

but yeah, let us know how it works out if you pick this up.

Looks good, as thomasp says let us know your results if you pick a kinect and try it out as I'm very interested to see how much extra work is needed after the capture to get decent anims.

well, i've been toying around with Brekel for Kinect and it's awesome and very clean if you prepare the room a little (in general, check for the floor IR-reflectivity and try to avoid a noisy background (noisy in terms of materials and depth).

on the topic of iPi Soft - last time i worked with that it didn't do realtime mocap but had to analyze the three camera inputs. How is that working now?

Hello It works in two parts.

First you make the depth movie with the kinect camera, and it saves as an avi file.

You then load that avi file into ipiStudio , It then processes the information and makes bones which are then exported as Max or MB bvh.:poly121:

Its pretty easy and I have demonstrated it in the above 2 tutorials.

Let me know if you still have questions.:)

    Thanks and Cheers

just note that this is a laborious process when it comes to multi camera calibration.

I am posting about the plug and play kinect (one camera) ipisoft version that requires 0 calibration.

    Thanks again and Cheers

Hi Thomas, never easy to animate....

However this does take a lot of the work out.

ipisoft kinect has lots of other nifty features like tri-linear jitter filtering.

I can make great animations about 50 times faster than I used too.

    Thanks and Cheers

    Hi Thomas,

Lets say you have 3 different moves in one depth movie inside ipistudio.

ipiStudio lets you assign takes that are then outputable so you can set up takes around the flash (garbage) SO that only the clean motions are exported.

I will try to demonstrate this in an upcoming tutorial.

    Thanks and Cheers
