After having watched these forums for quite some time and seen the brilliant work turned out, I thought I had better start posting some work of my own.
This is a high poly sculpt I did a while back in order to learn some more hard surface techniques in zbrush. The mesh is a lil decimated for rendering purposes, so that explains a bit of the artifacting on the skin. I'm hoping to build the low poly rather soon and aiming for a 2k diffuse, spec, normal.
I REALLY like your rendering on this! and the hard surface parts look nice to me. Some of the organic parts, especially the face, could use some defining though.
@daphz Hey mate, thanks for the crit! I'm a hard surface modeler by nature and rarely do any organic. Due to my time constraints, I need to move forward with this; but I appreciate anymore critiques you can offer. Your work is amazing by the way!
Here's the low poly for the frog. He's at 6,710 tris thus far.
Yeah seriously awesome rendering of this, when you were saying it was a sculpt I was thinking perhaps made of sculpy, looks very realistic in some of the shots. He doesn't really look like a frog to me in the face, closer to a chameleon - but it's still a pretty cool character! Well done
Here's the WIP texturing for the low poly. Still have a lot of seams to paint out along with overall polishing. It's a glimpse of the direction I'm heading though.
Here's some more texturing progress. I'd love some feedback on the tattoos and skin in general; and if anyone has tips for the eyes, I'd be much obliged. I do mostly hard surface texturing, so the organic side throws me for a loop.
Does anyone think the paint is too desaturated? I added a grunge layer, but I'm not sure if the paint should be more vibrant.
Seriously loving this. The colors do look a bit washed out though (skin and paint). As it stands, the color variation in the skin just looks like random blotchiness. I'd be interested to see some organic patterns in addition to the tattoos.
Small little update. Experimenting with the green emissive map. I also worked on the spots a bit more and played with spec. I keep postponing painting out those seams. haha.
Any feedback is much obliged! Hoping to finish this is the next couple days.
Very nice! I like the color variation, the skin change was a great idea too. I wouldent get too saturated as toads are quite different then frogs. Toads are terrestrial, frogs are amphibious :P Love the tribal too, great choice. Maybe add some variance to the back of him, compared to the belly they look the same.
Fink: Are you implying that he needs a tramp stamp? Also, this model has made you aroused while another dude has offered to have my babies. I'm assuming that's a good sign? hahaha.
OtrickP: Thanks mate! Glad you dig. I plan on keeping the skin somewhat desaturated just to avoid any conflicts with the armor color scheme. Blue and Orange for the win. What kind of variation should I add to the back?
Goraaz: The reason why they are pointing inwards is because I was shooting for exaggerated skin pores. Do you still think that should change? As for the image size, opening it in a new tab helps. I'm not sure why the size was cut back so much on that post. I'll make sure to have larger renders in the future. Thanks for the tips mate. Love your work.
I'd like to finish this all up today or tomorrow, so if anyone has any last minutes tips or crits, I'd be much obliged.
I think the coloring on the snout would be more realistic if the area above the mouth were darker than the area below. Any pictures of toads I can find with a lighter colored belly have a "seam" that follows this line. The shoulders should also maybe be a little darker, along with any surface areas on the body that would typically be in direct sunlight.

Loving the texture on the armour so far

Example:
Here's some experimenting I did with skin variation. I also saturated the paint a bit more.

Cool character though
