This is a prop I have been working on for a class. I am currently working on improving my sub-d modeling and learning how to normal bake to low poly. The concept for the design is my own, just rough sketches and some improvisation. C & C are welcome. Thanks.
The reason it looks more scifi is because there isn't a lot of construction detail. It needs bolts, screws, various seams in the wood and stuff like that before it'll look realistic.
Yeah, I had a hard time mixing the genres I wanted, I didnt want it to look too sci fi, and i didnt want it to look to medieval or elvish... I wanted it somewhere in the middle. I like the way it ended up though, the original design I had i scrapped because it looked too standard.
So I have finally come back around to finishing this prop. I am working on putting the finishing touches on my low poly bake right now. I am having a hard time coming up with a color/texture scheme though.
I have decided to just make this a full sci-fi prop, not a mixture of two genres. Anyone got any ideas on how I should texture this? Any ideas/paintovers could be helpful. Thanks polycount.
I'd say it looks more sci-fi because, well, they had no way to refine and twist metal like that back in the old days. And it looks like metal because of the shape, wood can't be shaped like that if it's not carved and polished, which would probably prevent any flexibility which is required for a ballista.
It looks interesting on it's own though, and I think if you push it a bit further without really aiming at any specific existing style you might end up with something really original and nice. Post updates
Here is the low poly with the normals. I am still working on cleaning up the normals. I have removed the rings because they didnt really fit the sci fi feel and added some small antenna that would be lit and used as part of the remote control of the cannon.
