u I was wondering if any of you guys had any experience with toon shaders? Do you think Maya Mental Ray with silhouette contour would be good enough?
Yep, should be good enough. You would need to play with the outlines to get that Tales of Vesperia outline. If you look close they're not black outlines, they're actually multiplied versions of the texture colors that the outline is on. Like the kids hair (forget his name) is brown, so the outline is a darker brown as if multiplied.
Google Maya's Toon shader. Christophe Desse done a really good tutorial on this sort of stuff for Gnomon as well. Sketch and Cell rendering in Maya I think its called. Its worth looking into.
