My first post here. University has more a less finished for the summer and wanted to set a good project for myself to improve my texturing, but also to get a good scene for my end of year portfolio next year.
One of my tutors, Aaron Foster, showed me the 'Scene From A Movie' contest that GameArtists has ran (
http://www.game-artist.net/forums/scene-movie-competition/9540-scene-movie-results.html ) and there are some really good looking ones. I was also really amazed by how small the textures actually were in comparrison with the work we've been doing at university.
I've decided to follow the same rules and limits the competition set out for this summer project because I think it should teach me quite a bit.
So this morning I've watched part of The Matrix and decided to base the level on the subway section at the end. I've created a Mood/Reference Board and tried to capture the layout of the subway - along with interesting details and form.

Looking forward to seeing this one, Fox!
Thought this would be a good project having to stick to the rules set by the competition. Had a bit of a setback when I textured the column and it came out really blurry - but that was really just my stupidity at texturing.
Re textured it and done the phonebox too, screenshots below. I'm kind of no sure about the phonebox UV map, don't think I could have made any better use of space though really :P
Criticism always accepted, cheers guys xD
And I think its made of wood, not metal. Hard to tell if there are any doors though.
p.s. Stop playing WoW and get to work!
That's a good point about it being wood, actually hadn't thought about that. Would probably end up looking better too :P Hadn't realised it was an open bottom either - off to a brilliant start, lol xD
Yeah I've kind of made half a blockmap planning out the layout of the scene, seems like a good idea to fully finish it though :P
good luck . hope to see more soon
Not posted on here for a while! I've finally finished the scene though, fairly pleased with it and certainly learned quite a few things through doing it.
I ended up giving my textures more love ;D and also used a fairly heavy modular set to build it.
Uploaded a youtube video with a camera flying through the scene, but as always the youtube conversion makes it much darker, so I've also attached a few screenshots:

Your lighting seem a bit off, here is a youtube for reference. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zIJCpUqeb4[/ame]
Bring down thoose contrasts and play with the desaturation of the scene. notice the pale brown colors and the slight yellow tinted lights.
hope it helps
I did intially do the lighting truer to the desaturated look of the film, but it didn't look that good. I noticed in the moodboard that some of the lights are actually warmer. I did this and the brought out a nice contrast between the warm orange lighting and the cooler green of the textures
Really, that atm is the biggest flaw. Before you even go into the other details, you may want to look into the normal pass you have over everything.
