Adding particle smoke to character, tips?

Hello,

I'm an 3D-artist at Krillbite Studio, and I'm currently struggling with one of the characters in a game we're making.

The character is an enemy in a horror game, and I'm trying to produce a smoke effect around him, like an evil aura. We tried doing it with particles in the game engine first, but when that didn't get satisfying results we're trying to do the particles in 3Dstudio instead.

What I'm wondering is if there are any tips to doing this? Without reaching too high poly counts (I'm converting particles to geometry) and getting a better visual effect than I currently have?

Here's what I've been trying to do so far:

Capture.PNG

How it's set up in the viewport. You can see the original particle emitter in the lower right corner, and I've copy-pasted it over the body, and linked them to different parts of the rig.

Capture_Render.jpg

Still render of the result.

Animation

A short rendered movie to see the smoke in effect.

As you probably can see, it doesn't really create a very good looking effect, and would surely appreciate any input on how I could do this in a better way.

Thanks in advance!
