Landscape shadows solid black?

Any idea why this may be happening? My material here is a regular by-the-books landscape material, and the only light is this dominant directional.

Is this after building lighting? Do you have a lightmass importance volume? Do you have environment color set to a color other than black?

I can't even build lighting with landscape. You sure you aren't running that with dynamic lighting? If you aren't, try adding some environmental colour in the world properties. It's under Lightmass settings tab.
