It doesn't have to be good bye however, I believe you will find that desire again if you treat making assets for real-time game engines as a hobby and not as something you need to get a job.
I think that is what a lot of artists struggle with, myself included. Trying to build your skill just for a job versus just making art because you love to make scenes you can walk around in.
I'm currently doing a distance learning degree in Interior Architecture. I absolutely hate it. I started it a couple years ago when I thought I had an interest in the subject. Shortly after starting it I realised how wrong I was. The sole reason I've continued to do it is to support my visa application later. I couldn't care less about having the actual degree, and I sure as hell don't plan to use any knowledge I've picked up from it.
Now I just found out I have a lot more of it left than I thought, like 18 months more. And I'm really ready to just pull out to focus my time on other things.
eh, decisions aren't actions. You haven't quit anything. You're just focusing on something else right now. Maybe you'll focus back on art later. Maybe you won't. Regardless, these sorts of "decisions" aren't real.
yeah take some time off, it does a body good. I stopped looking for and applying for game jobs. I went back to IT and having a blast, playing games again and still love looking at polycount and what's coming out of it, still not really touched my portfolio again yet, but I will even if it's just for indie things and mods later on down the road. I'm just burned out at the moment, but just take a break and come back polycount is awesome, you can check out anytime you'd like but you can never leave..
You certainly have been flip flopping around on this issue a lot. Not that I fault you for it with things the way they are now. I'm in the midst of switching gears a bit myself.
I think you should've left your original post up. From what I remember of it, posts like that though not encouraging the hard core pro game artist attitude that is glorified around here it does give voice to unspoken thoughts of many in similar situations which may have lead to a good discussion.
Well, best of luck with whatever you want to do.
Though I have a feeling you'll be back sooner or later.
