Comic book villain, character project

Hi all!

I've been working on my first game-spec character model (well...first somewhat successful character model anyway!) using Zbrush, 3ds Max and Photoshop. It's still a WIP but I think it's going okay so far.

Please let me know what you think! Any feedback/advice/criticism etc is greatly appreciated :)

Here are a few images of my sculpt in Zbrush. Sadly I don't think I did the head all that well, particularly the ears, and it seems I messed up the eyes somewhat. But I'm fairly happy with how the rest of the body turned out.

I went ahead and retopologised the model, and started texturing too. The model is 9,514 tris, and so far there is a Diffuse and a Normal map both at 2048x2048.

I'm having difficulty getting the lips to look right, but I'm reasonably pleased with the rest of it so far. Now I've got to iron out all those seams...!

Thanks again for the help!

    Hey Wocky!
The lips seem to be pouting somewhat and dont get enough definition in the sculpt. Id check the lower half of the face against some reference images.
    Hope this helps!

Hey Turkey-san, good to see you here ; )

Yeah I think the head needs work all around, I guess it's a bit too late to go back to that sadly. Live and learn I suppose...thanks for the feedback! I'll keep it in mind for next time.

Do you have any reference of the original character for us? So we can criticize from it?

I think u should work on the topology. you can do a lot better and cleaner work specially on the bust. email me @ dj.teran@yahoo.com I can pass a great starting bust tutorial u can use.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the crit! I used a different person for the head as to the body, probably not the best idea now that I think about it. I actually created the head some time ago, I thought I'd try attaching it to the body.

    Head reference:

This body reference was used for the base mesh:

I can't seem to find where the T-pose images went, but this is the same person I referenced from. Sorry about that, I hope this is okay. Let me know if you need anything else to see.

For sculpting I used general human anatomy references from all over the place, including other Zbrush works.

Thanks for the offer Turista, that sounds great. I'll wizz you an e-mail! Yeah unfortunately the topology is pretty rough. I used the Zbrush retopology tools and I've come to the conclusion that I don't like them much, haha.

    Appreciate the help, guys!

If you're going for a comic book villain, I'd say you're missing the bar. EVen though you're just modelling him in a generic pose, I think that by default his features, anatomy, and position (to an extent) should all reflect what he's going to be. Right now he's definitely pretty 'average joe' looking. In fact the proportions of his face look somewhat infantile, and innocent.

I don't see anything wrong with using a different face ref than the body. In fact I say use as many different references as possible.

Right now the proportions are off in several places too. Just keep checking your references against it. The face looks too small for the head - the eyes and mouth especially could use some widening I think. It looks a bit like his facial features are all huddling together in the center of his face at the moment.

Topology could definitely use some work, some wonky stuff happening in places, but you've acknowledged that it's rough so hopefully you'll be fixing this. Yeah, ZBrush retopology isn't the best.

yea just hit me up, i just think u can do better on the loops and cleanliness of the topology and that will help u a lot with the shape and detail u want to get.

    Thanks for the crit everyone!

Yeah I can see what you mean about the face in particular, Shiniku. I don't think it looks very villainous haha. Quite a bad mistake on my part. I'll see what I can do about that!
