so. i've run into this twice so far. Randomly, i'll have an object that get's squished when i rotate it. picture A is it's normal state, picture B is it's distorted state after it is rotated 90 degrees in any direction.
If i duplicate the object, the same thing happens. Freezing transformations/Deleting history doesn't help. It also happens if I enter a rotation value into the channel box. The only fix i've found is to export the object as an obj and reimport it, which is ridiculous. Anybody else experience this? what causes it? is it a bug, or did i do something wrong?

It's very easy to recreate this dilemma. Make any new object in Maya, group it, scale the group along one axis. Now select the object and rotate it. Skeeeeeweeeeed.
1. create a new poly object
2. combine the new object to the one with scaling issues
3. separate the two objects again.
This usually takes care of the problem, and is easier than exporting and reimporting an .obj
