Hey gang!
I found out about this competition quite recently and, while not being a character artist, I decided on making a fighter anyway.
I'm going for the hidden character "Mars People" from SNK vs. Capcom CHAOS.
While "he" usually appears in the Metal Slug series, he also stars in this game for some reason, and since I have always been a big fan of the little critter, I just couldn't resist doing it.

LOW POLY
HIGH POLY
This is the current moodboard that I've got, kind of just for me to decide on in which direction I am going with him.
I'm going to be heavily influenced by the metal slug games in terms of design, and the twist on the character would be to kind of have him in some sort of a space suit with pipes connected to his head. I also want heavy doses of blood or alien goop involved, and maybe have him controlling some sort of mechanized suit.

So I spent some lunch time on doodling some sketches of the little fella, and came up with the idea of having homeboy being genetically enhanced into some kind of superior mars-being, complete with arm-legs, big smile and a brain stuffed in there in the back.
Tomorrow I will continue adding a bunch of details. Oh, and that thing in the front there is supposed to be transparent so that you can see the little guy just hanging around in there, but more pictures of that later!
I decided to only make one brain-jar on the back instead of three, and I designed it to be more bulbous (definitely a real word) so that the brain would get more space.
I'm currently trying to decide on what kind of feet would fit in.
The experimentation I did with dreadnaughty feet didn't pan out too well, so something along the lines of like... suction cups might fit in a bit better. (I also like how they kind of look like those old timey UFOs.)
Also - his ass is a bit of a wreck. It needs tons of more details, so I'm going to spend some time on adding some nice panels, ventilation shafts maybe and probably a bolt or two.
Im kind of done with the high poly, apart from the brain that needs to go into the tank in the back. It'll have some tubes going through it as well, but that shouldn't take to long to make.
I'm actually thinking of filling the bulb with some alien goop instead, depending on if it would look better.
I'm just finishing of uv-mapping the low poly, so hopefully there will be some normalmap and occlusion bake action going on in a day or two!
I wanted to suggest modeling his mars people's ray gun, or a new larger version of the gun that the mech hand could hold out in front.
could be cool.
Ill make sure to sort out the tiling on the legs and that stuff, but it's pretty solid looking otherwise.
