I've just finished my new UDK scene called The Nocturnal Vapour (aka The Dark Carnival). I've worked on her for over the last five months, hope it was worth it. Feel free to comment and criticize. Thanks in advance!
Holy shit this was amazing, very creepy and epic and awesome all rolled up into one tasty roll!! God I would like to play around in this enviro fighting some creepy monsters or something, what's the backstory/futureplans with this one?
Amazing environment, it shows that you spent five months on this. It was surely worth the time invested in it. Love the atmosphere, alot of elements are coming together very nicely to bring that dark creepy feeling and the music I love. Do you have any breakdown shots for the assets/environment, would be nice to see some production stuff for this one?
Fuuuuuuuuuck man! Freaking awesome! I'm impressed both by the result and your dedication! I could never stick with such a big scene that long, sad i know.
As you can see I don't spend much time making every object perfect. I rather focus on composition.
I've made just a few textures which are basing on HP model. Most of textures are just photos, mixed and combined to fit each other.
I didn't base on any concept are while working on this map. The main influences came from Thief III, Assasins Creed II, Oblivion and Fable series. Frankly, It was much of a pure improvisation.

Even without any characters in the scene, it still seems so alive!

As far as my lighting technique is concerned I'm a follower of Hourences hints. He has pretty interesting approach to this kind of stuff, take a look: http://www.hourences.com/the-hows-and-whys-of-level-design-examples/
I've found a few screens depicting different stages of development, some of them looks pretty funny
