I am not the biggest fighting fan but offouse I will join the BRAWL!
Mokujin the wooden combat training doll was my fighter pick and I will put him in some kind of hitchcock movie with the art style of the excellent short film The Backwater Gospel (A big fun experiment for me). He will become more nature kind of wood then before and have black plants as joints. I will also try to fit so many birds as possible because they are part of the whole character idea of an old wandering warrior.

That's up for you to decide ofcourse, but I would experiment a bit before settling on what you have already. Who says he needs to be made of wood. Its the essence of the character that's important.
