I had a really rad idea for the Ice Climbers, but seeing as though I can't do them both as one fighter, I'm doing my favourite stage from SSBM: Pokemon Stadium.
My plan is to redo Pokemon Stadium in an ancient roman style amphitheatre. It doesn't sound like a particularly original idea, however I really want to try and incorporate the pokemon universe into the roman style architecture and sculpture that will be present.
I haven't decided whether or not I will have alternate versions of the stage for the transformations that occur during the fighting. If I do end up including transformations, they will be very primitive.. think gladiatorial.

Although I think you'd be restricted as I'm not sure that you're allowed to take the linearity out? (ie: have a mountain pop up in the middle)
If you're looking towards epic sort of marble architecture, you should check out how they did the stages in pokemon stadium 1 & 2. Very primitive modelling I know, but the aesthetic composition is still worth considering.
Good Luck!
Also did a very rough concept.
Those golden eagles will be golden Ho-Ohs or something.. very rough, but I think I know what I'm doing.
Next is the block out.
Be sure to think about how the Pokemon universe would have existed in this time.
-what would the poke balls look like?
-would the pokeon fight humans in combat? If so, any remains around (that could be a little morbid!)
-How would the arena contain flying pokemon?
Looking forward to seeing more of this.
@uk_resistant - I've been thinking about this too. I thought about reinventing pokeballs, but in this scene theyre only really symbols, and I don't think I want to change the symbols too much. I haven't really thought about containing flying pokemon.. :P I do love the idea of remains lying around though!
Going to start the blockout soon.
I've been blocking the scene out. My biggest challenge has been balancing the scale of the colosseum with the scale of the fighting arena. I've had to make a fair bit of compromise both ways.. I'm mostly worrying about architectural details getting lost in the background.. But we'll see.
I'm also thinking I'm going to need a crowd if I want this stage to look exciting, and I have some good ideas for that. I'm also going to try and have some really nice lighting effects, like rays coming through the sails on the top.. I'm going to try and give it that epic history style you get in movies like Gladiator and 300.
Can't wait to get some higher details into UDK.
I've been learning the ropes in UDK today.. did some mucking around with the pokeball in the middle of the stage. I'm pretty please with the lighting effect I'll be able to get with this scene, I think some bright red sails will make it look pretty neat.
I've made a fair bit of progress today. I modelled the basic forms up top of the stadium.. I nutted out the terrain tools in UDK, Fixed the pokeball so it didn't look so flat, did a bit of texturing.
